THE INUIT MYTH OF THE GREAT RAVEN, CREATOR OF ALL LIVING THINGS
Grande corvo viveva con la moglie, erano i primi esseri viventi e si erano creati da soli
Great Raven lived with his wife, they were the first living things and they created themselves.
Una mattina la moglie di Grande Corvo era stanca di vivere da sola su una piccola zolla di terra pianeggiante, chiese al marito di popolare la Terra. Allora Grande Corvo volò in cielo e liberò alcune feci che diventarono dei continenti.
One morning Great Raven’s wife, who was tired of living alone on a small mass of level soil, asked her husband to populate the Earth. So Great Raven flew into the sky and let some stools fall which became the continents.
Grande Corvo, mentre volteggiava, fece pipì e formò con essa l'acqua dolce. Nei suoi voli il corvo volle formare anche le montagne, vomitando.
Great Raven urinated while he was flying and that formed freshwater. During his flights the Raven formed mountains as well by vomiting.
Il corvo trovò gli alberi e iniziò ad abbatterli. Le schegge caddero in acqua fino al mare.
The Raven found trees and started tearing them down. Their chips fell into the water all the way to the sea.
Quando le schegge dei pini toccarono l'acqua del mare, si trasformarono in trichechi.
When the pine chips touched sea water they were transformed into walruses.
Poi dalle schegge delle querce nacquero le foche.
Seals were formed from oak chips.

The origin of whales was birch chips.

And from other chips came fish, crabs and all the other marine animals.

When the chips touched the earth they formed reindeer and bears.
E altre schegge diedero vita alle volpi
And other chips gave life to foxes.
Nello stesso modo si formarono tutti gli altri animali
All the other animals were formed in the same way.
Poi vennero formati uomini e donne, ma non si sa come avvenne
Then men and women were created, but no one knows how this happened.
