Non ci sono rumori di motori, almeno quando non dobbiamo caricare le batterie, ma non c'e quasi mai silenzio completo. Adesso, per esempio, se fossimo in pozzetto sentiremmo lo sciabordio dell'acqua contro lo scafo, il cigolio dei bozelli (pulegge) e lo sbattere del vele. Sotto coperta c'e ancor piu` rumore perche` lo scafo e` come una cassa armonica, anche se ben isolato come il nostro. Dormire e` difficile, all'inizio, ma poi ci si abitua al concerto tanto che se si sente un rumore nuovo si salta fuori per controllare se tutto va bene e se nulla si sia rotto o slegato. Non abbiamo occasione di parlare molto fra di noi, specialmente se l'equpaggio e` relativamente ridotto come ora. Le guardie sono al freddo e timonare richiede tutta la concentrazione. Dobbiamo anche fare foto e film per documentare il viaggio. Sotto coperta e fuori turno pasiamo la magior parte del tempo a dormire e per il resto ci sono i compiti da svolgere, comela manutenzione, la cucina, la scrittura degli articoli e dei messaggi e la ricezione delle previsioni meteo. Tutto sommato non c'e`da annoiarsi, anche se non capitano avvenimenti speciali come la visita di delini e balene! Sailing is no silence. True, there are no motor noises, but there is almost never complete silence. Now, for example, if we are outside we can hear the cracking of some pulleys, the flapping of the sails and the sloshing of the water running against our hull. Inside there is even more noise and it is definitely louder. The hull is like a violin cage, even if it is well insulate, like ours. Sleeping is difficult, at first. But soon we get used to the usual concert and jump up fully alert as soon as a new noise is heard, hopping on deck to check if everything is all right. We talk little among us especially when we are relatively short handed like at present. The watches are cold at our latitude and the task of steering keeps you concentrated. There are also pictures and movies o be taken now and then. Below deck and out of watches we sleep most of the time and for the rest we have tasks to perform: maintenance, cooking, writing reports and messages, getting weather reports. All in all there is no idle time to get bored, even if no special events takes place, like the visit of dolphins and whales.
