Chi ha mai sentito parlare del mare di Irminger? Be' ora ci stiamo navigando sopra. Sulla carta danese che stiamo usando per la navigazione il nome indica l'area a sud dello stretto che separa l'Islanda dalla Groenlandia e che si chiama Stretto di Danimarca. Ci sono un sacco di delfini e di balene. Poche ore passano tra un avistamento e l'altro. Abbiamo visto globicefali, balenottere minori e balenottere comuni, capodogli, anche i rarissimi iperodonti boreali e una quantita` di delfini. Il mare e` una tavola. Brezze leggere di qualche nodo lo fanno rabbrividire qua` e la`. C'e` un'insolita grande area di alta pressione che si estende sula parte occidentale del Nord Atlantico e sembra intenzionata a rimanerci per alcuni giorni ancora. Nessuna possibilita` di usare le vele da quando siamo partiti da Reykjavik, ma non ci lamentiamo! Siamo certi che ci prenderemo comunque la nostra parte di tempeste prima della fine del viaggio. Passiamo il tempo delle guardie e quello di riposo scattando fotografie, cucinando abbondanti pasti, scrivendo i nostri racconti e cercando di contattare verie stazioni radio con poco successo. Il nostro equipaggiamento e` eccellente e siamo diventati esperti nel ricevere le carte meteofax e scambiando messaggi e-mail col nostro computer di bordo. Ci manca la capacita` di mandare e ricevere attachment con la posta, come mappe o foto, perche` bisogna utilizzare un altro sistema e forse non abbiamo ancora trovato i parametri corretti. Mandiamo anche le nostre posizioni con regolarita` via un altro sistema satellitare e speriamo che le riceviate e che vengano riportate sulla mappa inserita sul nostro sito. Non abbiamo mezzi per verificare se sono arrivate. Stiamo tutti bene e siamo tutti al settimo cielo. Tra pochi giorni ci avvicineremo all'area dove incontreremo i ghiacci e gli iceberg. Ci aspettiamo di trovare un tempo piu` freddo (ora siamo in maglietta!) e anche la nebbia prima che le abituali schiarite che dovrebbero trovarsi un po' piu` a nord di Kap Farvel, la punta estrema meridionale della Groenlandia.
Who has ever heard of Irminger Sea? Well, we are right now sailing in it. On the Danish chart we use for navigation purposes the name identifies the sea south of the strait between Iceland and Greenland known as Denmarks' Strait. Plenty of dolphins and whales roam this area. No more than few hours between sightings. We met Pilot Whales, Minke Whales, Fin Whales, Sperm Wales, even four very rare Bottlenose Whales, plus a number of dolphins. The sea is unbelievably calm. Variable breezes no more than a few knots are leaving patches of still water around us. An unusual very large area of high pressure extends over the western half of the North Atlantic ad seems to be bound to stay put for a few days more. Absolutely no use for sails since we left Reykjavik, but we do not complain. We will get for sure our share of gales before the end of our trip. We spend our time on watch and off taking pictures, cooking and eating healthy meals, writing reports and trying to contact via radio various shore radio stations with very limited success. Our radio equipment is very good and we are now expert in receiving weather faxes and sending and receiving e-mails through our computer. Despite the failure of one of our satellite systems we are in good shape. What we still miss is the ability to send and receive attachments to the mail, like photos or maps, because in that case the system is different and we are likely missing some fundamental setting to the radio or the computer. We send also our position regularly through another satellite system ad we hope that it is received and plotted on the map attached to our website. We do not have a way to check it. Everyone is in good health and excited by the experience. In the next few days we will approach he area where we will met ice and icebergs. We expect to find colder weather (we wear sleeves) and fog, before the usual clearings that should be more northwards of Kap Farvel, the southernmost tip of Greeenland.
