Ci siamo entrati dopo ventiquattr'ore piene di lotta con venti superiori a quaranta nodi. Il nostro viaggio da Nome è stato fortunato, come il resto della nostra spedizione. Ciò non vuol dire che sia stato facile, nossignore, tutt'altro. Difficile, rude e terribilmente rischioso. Ma ce l'abbiamo fatta appena in tempo. Ce l'abbiamo fatta tre ore appena prima che il vento prendesse forza da uragano. Eravamo già sicuri all'ormeggio quando i quaranta nodi sono diventati ottanta (dichiarazione dell'Harbor Master) che significa, per i non addetti ai lavori, da forza otto a forza dodici, una situazione che in mare fa rischiare la vita. Best Explorer, la nostra fantastica barca, riposerà qui per i prossimi sei mesi prima di riprendere il mare l'anno prossimo lungo le coste dell'Alaska. Siamo tutti fieri del nostro successo, sia per noi stessi che per il nostro Paese. Il viaggio ci ha cambiato, lo sentiamo. We sailed in after a full twentyfour hours of struggle in winds of forty-plus knots. Our trip from Nome has been lucky, as it has been all our expedition. It doesn't mean that all has been easy, no sir, on the contrary: tough, rough and damned risky. But we made it just in time. We made it mere three hours before the wind turned to hurricane force. We were already moored securely to the floating pier when the wind of forty knots increased to eighty (according to information from the Harbor Master) which means, for the layman, from force eight to force twelve, a life threatening situation out at sea. Best Explorer, our fantastic boat, will rest for the next six months here, before resuming her trip along Alaska next year. We have completed our expedition, lucky beyond all expectations. We are all proud of our accomplishment, both for ourselves and for our Country. Our trip has changed us deeply, we know. What we still have to discover, together with you, is how much and how deeply it has changed us.
