Ci siamo! La cambusa per cinque mesi è sistemata. I freschi saranno caricati all’ultima tappa. Le cabine sono occupate da ceste, sacchetti, pacchi e buste, lasciando giusto lo spazio per noi quattro.
Le vele sono inferite, le cime adugliate e appese nei gavoni. I parabordi infilati nella cala vele e il ponte sgombro, a parte i due gommoni assicurati davanti al tambucio e all’albero.
La barca ora sembra davvero una barca a vela.
Prima tappa a venti miglia a nord per riempire i serbatoi di acqua potabile, che a Guaymas non è disponibile.
Abbiamo verificato il funzionamento di tutto quel che potevamo, ma è chiaro che alcune cose si possono provare solo “dal vivo” e qui troviamo alcune sorprese, la più critica delle quali è l’impossibilità di tendere lo strallo di poppa.
Ci troviamo quindi costretti a percorrere la prima tappa a motore.
Quando arriviamo al porto di San Carlos, il pontile del carburante ha chiuso i battenti e invece di ripartire subito per La Paz ci troviamo a dover aspettare l’indomani.
Il problema dello strallo si risolve molto semplicemente: siamo liberi di cenare a cuor leggero. Domattina dunque si riparte e finalmente diretti a sud.
Here we are! Our food for five months is stored, fresh food will wait to be loaded on the last stop. Our cabins are filled with baskets, bags, packages and envelopes, leaving just the amount of space to let us live.
Sails are rigged, ropes stored in lockers. Fenders have been put in the sails room and the deck is finally free, apart from the two inflatables secured in front of the hatch and the mast.
The boat looks like a sailing boat again.
We verified that everything is working, within the limits of our capability, but it is to be expected that some details could be tested only while using them, so as we sail away we find the most critical one: we cannot tension the backstay! That means motoring for the first twenty miles until we reach San Carlos.
There we aim to take drinkable water, but the fuel dock, where we could find it (in Guaymas it is not available in the quantities we need) is closed for the night and we have to wait until tomorrow morning.
Our stop is productive and we easily solve the backstay problem: we can dine in high spirits! Tomorrow we will finally set course to the south.
