Una delle domande piu` comuni che ci vengno poste riguarda il freddo e come si resista e possa perfino piacere navigare a queste latitudini artiche. Giusto! In questi ultimi giorni, ad esempio, siamo entrati nella corrente della Goenlandia orientale che proviene dall'Oceano Artico con la temperatura dell'acqua che e` scesa a 0,2 gradi e quella dell'aria a sua volta a 3 gradi. L'effetto del vento in queste condizioni e` forte, anche se siamo ben coperti con tre strati di abiti per il secco, il primo, il caldo il secondo e l'impermeabile al vento e all'acqua il terzo, piu` guanti spessi, stivali adeguati e passsamontagna e berretti di lana. Ma quello che migliora radicalmente la nostra condizione e` la piccola copertura di tela che protegge totalmente il pozzetto e che ripara efficacemente dal vento (e dagli spruzzi). Nessuna barca che voglia navigare a queste latitudini dovrebbe essere priva di un posto di pilotaggio coperto e chiuso. Nel pozzetto cosi` riparato possiamo non godere di temperature piu` elevate, benche` queste divengano addiritura confortevoli quando il sole lo riscaldi come una serra attraverso le finestrature di plastica. Ma la sensazione e` buona, sorprendentemente, e possiamo rimanere al timone senza soffrire il freddo fino a tre ore prima di scendere sotocoperta al calore dei 20 gradi che manteniamo costantemente all'interno. What really improves our condition is the small fabric hut that completely protects our cockpit and effectively blocks the wind and the sray out of our shelter. No boat sailing these latitudes should be without a similar protection allowing the steering of the boat from an enclosed position. In the protected cockpit we might not have higher temperatures, actually raising to really comfortable ones as soon as the sun shines through the plastic windows, though. But the feeling is good, surprisingly so, and we can stay without feeling any discomfort up to three hours in a row, before getting back to the inside temperature of 20 degrees
