Da Sisimiut verso nord la Groenlandia comincia a mostrarsi nella sua veste migliore. Come è successo prima, è necessario seguire una rotta posta diverse miglia al largo, perché la zona non è stata cartografata quasi da nessuna parte. In realtà ci sarebbe una rotta sotto costa tra le isolette e le rocce più interne, ma ha una sola linea di sonde che, qua e là, mostra anche rocce affioranti e bassifondi. Sarebbe anche interessante esplorarla, ma bisognerebbe avere molto tempo per farlo con lentezza e attenzione. Verso sud c'è una linea di nuvole, ma verso nord il cielo è sereno e l'aria tiepida. All'inizio non c'è neanche vento. Lasciamo il molo alle sette sgusciando da dietro tre barche da pesca che si erano ormeggiate a noi durante la notte. La coste diventa subito aspra con le montagne che s'innalzano direttamente dal mare. Sulle cime neve e ghiaccio scintillano. E' la Groenlandia che ci aspettavamo! Per qualche ora un vento al giardinetto ci permette di issare l'MPS, una vela leggera simile allo spinnaker, ma più facile da manovrare quando il vento non è proprio di poppa. Il giorno dopo siamo arrivati al limite della baia di Disko e cominciamo a incontrare iceberg. Qualcuno davvero molto grande. CI sono miraggi e all'orizzonte sembrano fantastici castelli, grandi isole, possenti fortezze, grandi navi. Alcuni brillano al sole, altri sono grigi quando in ombra. All'inizio procediamo di bolina con randa, yankee e trinchetta, più tardi con una mano di terzaroli e lo yankee in parte rollato, col vento che raggiunge i 28 nodi. Ci sono dei growler che si nascondono tra le onde ed è un problema vederli in tempo per evitarli. Un grande iceberg ci sbarra la strada verso Godthavn. Sono così grandi che spesso raggiungono il fondo del mare dove si arenano dove il fondo si alza sopra le zone circostanti. Sembra che lo possiamo lasciare sottovento, ma all'ultimo momento incontriamo una forte corrente che ci spinge contro la parete bianca. Poggiamo giusto in tempo. Abbiamo imparato una lezione e in futuro gireremo al largo. Il porto è molto protetto e noi troviamo un ormeggio lungo una barca da pesca, con un'altra che dopo poco si mette accanto a noi. Godthavn è un villaggio carino, per lo più situato su una penisola. Tutti questi iceberg nascono da un grande ghiacciaio sull'isola principale. Un gran numero rimane spiaggiato dalla parte est della penisola ed è magico vederne una notevole quantità quasi allineati di fronte alla riva mentre la nebbia si innalza e gradualmente li nasconde dietro uno schermo bianco. Più tardi in giornata consegniamo il nostro CD per le scuole a un'insegnante che a sua volta le consegnerà. La sua casa e posta in fronte a un piccolo stagno ed è arredata con lineari mobili danesi e che ospitano intagli locali fatti con avorio e di eccellente fattura che ammiriamo mentre il marito ci canta canzoni groenlandesi molto belle accompagnandosi con la chitarra. L'unico problema sono le zanzare che ci assalgono e che ci obbligano a indossare una rete antizanzara che ci copre la testa e guanti che proteggono le mani. Domani salperemo di nuovo diretti a Iluulissat sulla costa ovest della Groenlandia, visto che sembra che la baia di Disko sia coperta da iceberg, ma che questi lascino abbastanza acqua per passare.
From Sisimiut northwards Greendland begins to show its best. As before, it is necessary to set our course several miles offshore, as the coast has not been surveyed almost anywhere. To be precise, there is actually an onshore route within the innermost islets and rocks, but it has a only single line of soundings that, at times, show rocks awash and shoals. It would be interesting to explore it, but we should have a lot of time to do it slowly and carefully. To the south there is a low cover of clouds, but to the north the sky is clear and the air is mild. No wind at the beginning. We left the pier at seven, slipping out from between the three fishermen that during the night came to moor alongside. The coast becomes rugged right away and the mountains raise straight from the sea. On top ice and snow shine brilliantly. This is the Greenland we expected! For a few hours a following wind allows us to hoist the MPS, a light sail similar to a spinnaker but easier to handle when the wind is not directly from the stern. The following day we have progressed to the limit of Disko Bay and we start meeting icebergs. Some are really huge. There are mirages and at the horizon they seem fantastic castles, huge islands, powerful fortresses, large ships. Some shine in the sun, some are dark grey when in shadow. We are reaching at first with main, yankee and jib, later with reefed main and jib, as the wind tops at 28 knots. Growlers lurk between the waves and it is a problem to spot them in time. A huge iceberg near Godthavn stays put in our way. They are so big that they often reach the bottom of the sea and get stranded where it raises above the surrounding area. It seems that we can leave it downwind, but at the last minute a strong current sets along the big mass of ice and let us drift directly against the white wall. We bear away just in time. We learn the lesson and in the future we will stay clear of the bergs. The harbour is very well sheltered and we find a mooring alongside a fishing vessel, with the usual other coming along us before long. Godthavn is a little nice village, mostly set on a peninsula. All those icebergs are calved from a huge glacier on the mainland. A number of them end up stranded an the east side of the peninsula and it is a fairy sight looking at the great number of them almost aligned in front of the shore while the fog sets from the sea and gradually hides them behind a white screen. Later in the day we can deliver our school CD to a teacher that will deliver it in time to the right person. Her house is nicely situated in front of a small pond and is furnished with neat Danish cupboards showing local ivory carvings of the nicest quality that we admire while the husband plays a guitar singing us a really good local song. The only drawback are the mosquitoes that force us to wear a mosquito net covering our heads and gloves to protect our hands. Tomorrow we will sail again as it seems that Disko Bay is littered with icebergs but that there is enough water to pass through and reach Iluulissuat on the west coast of Greenland.
